Where Did The Doors band get their name?

"Morrison chose the band’s name after reading Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception, which got its title from a quote in a book written by William Blake, “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.” The quote is as follows, “If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro’ narrow chinks of his cavern.”

One of the copies of William Blake’s unique hand-painted editions, created for the original printing of the poem. The line from which Huxley draws the title is in the second to last paragraph. This image represents Copy H, Plate 14 of The Marriage of Heaven and Hell which is currently held at The Fitzwilliam Museum."

Mojos Rising Live at Meg's Beachwood Restaurant & Club Saturday Sept 16th, 2023 in Pacific City!

Mojos played to a big crowd during Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic Surf Festival in Pacific City.  The Mojos Saturday night show at Meg's was packed and was a huge success.  A great outdoor venue and a great night of music.  We are planning to be back in Pacific City this summer for another Show!

Mojos Rising wraps up a successful 2023 and is looking forward to 2024 shows!

2023 was a solid year for Mojos Rising, as the band played some memorable shows.

A Mojos highlight was headlining the outside stage Saturday night at Meg's Beachwood Restaurant & Club during the Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic Surf Festival.  The Mojos drew a large and enthusiastic crowd of surfing competitors, spectators and music fans to the Pacific City club.  The Surf Sliders opened the show--performing a special set of classic surf songs selected specifically for the Longboard Classic Festival. The Longboard Festival is one of the biggest weekends of the year on the Central Oregon Coast.  The Mojos are planning to play coastal gigs again in 2024.

An inland highlight was playing another outside show: the Silverton Shindig on a beautiful October afternoon.  The large and enthusiastic audience was literally “dancing in the streets” as the Mojos rocked the Orleans Alley stage. The Mojos have been invited back to play the Shindig again in 2024.

An August indoor concert at a favorite Mojos venue-Tigard’s Canton Phoenix Lounge was followed by a rare summer rainstorm complete with thunder and lightning.  The Mojos had opened their set earlier that evening with their rendition of Doors’ classic Riders on The Storm. The band set the mood for the song from a darkened stage with rain and thunder sound effects piped through the PA system. Was the subsequent late-night real storm a coincidence, or perhaps the Lizard King himself Jim Morrison signaling his approval from afar?

The Mojos are currently booking out their 2024 schedule and have announced a special Saturday May 4th show headlining Tigard’s Canton Phoenix Lounge. Mojos Rising welcomes The Surf Sliders to open this 3-hour show! Please mark your calendars for this concert, as the Mojos introduce great new additions to their exciting set list.  Please check back to our website regularly and sign up below to receive Mojos email updates.

Get your mojo working and come out and see Mojos Rising live in 2024!

we are mojos rising!

Mojos Rising started as a couple of guys wanting to play some Doors songs for fun. Mojo Todd and Mojo Gary both love The Doors and have a shared appreciation for the band, their music and what The Doors were able to achieve in a remarkably short period of time during the late 60's. They had an idea to get together and play some Doors music beyond the usual covers other bands play from time-to-time. They recruited Mojo Alex on drums and then Mojo Alan on bass, and quickly got together at Mountain Top Studio to delve into some of their Doors favorite songs. Things clicked immediately and they set out to find a Doors fan musician who played keys. Along came Mojo Ben and they knew they had something special that was worth dedicating time to. "The more we played this music, the more we grew to enjoy and appreciate it". "Our goal is to share this timeless classic music in a live concert setting with all of those who are able to make it to our shows." And Mojos Rising was born!!!

Get your Mojo On!

We are an Oregon-based Doors Tribute band consisting of seasoned musicians that delivers faithful renditions of your favorite Doors songs coupled with an energetic performance in the spirit of this classic rock band.

Get your Mojo going!

After adding additional classic Doors songs to our playlist, Mojos Rising will be playing additional clubs in the Pacific Northwest during the summer months.  We think you will enjoy hearing these classic rock songs again in our live performances.  Come out and get your mojo working!

Todd Blickenstaff

Lead Vocals, Percussion.  Todd (aka Mojo Todd, “The Lizard King” and “The Banker”) is a walking encyclopedia of music.  He has a lifelong passion and interest in bands and musicians of the 60’s and 70’s and beyond.  He also spent time as a music promoter booking bands for concerts at the Univeristy of Oregon during his years there as a student.  Todd has been involved in several bands over the years, most recently country and classic rock band Triad.  Todd founded Mojos Rising with Gary Gustin, both having shared appreciation and interest in the music of The Doors.

Gary Gustin

Guitars, Vocals and Drums. Gary (aka Mojo Gary) is a multi-instrumentalist including electric and acoustic guitars for a variety of musical styles, bass, drums and vocals.  He has played in multiple bands in the Portland area.  His musical influences cross a wide range of genres and include John Lennon, Jimmy Page, all of the Doors members, and many others.  He spends time writing and recording music and building custom guitar amplifiers. Gary captures the distinctive and unique tone and style of Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger.

Rayford Dickerson Jr.

Keys, Guitar, Drums. Rayford (aka Ray and Mojo Ben) hails from the LA area in his early years.  He started his music career immersed in the local Surf music scene before migrating North to the Portland area.  Rayford is a multi-instrumentalist and plays guitars, bass, drums, piano, keys and vocals among other instruments.  Rayford’s influences were his father Rayford Dickerson Sr. and Dick Dale, Nokie Edwards, Paul Johnson, Eddie Bertrand, and more recently John Blair.  Rumor has it that Rayford’s father played with and influenced some of the greats of the day in the LA area during the late 50’s and early 60’s.

Alan Williams

Bass.  Alan (aka Mojo Alan) picked up bass at the young age of 51 years. His first band was The Demotion of Pluto which included Alex Moss and Gary Gustin. His bass influences are Paul McCartney, Geddy Lee, and Davie504. Although The Doors didn’t play live with a bassist, Alan tries to emulate Ray Manzarek’s keyboard bass as well as session bassists on many of The Doors' recordings."

Alex Moss

Drums and Guitar.  Alex (aka Mojo Alex) is a multi-instrumentalist and dabbles in all things music.  Alex is from Marin County, California.   He spent is early years playing various woodwind instruments before switching to drums and percussion and guitar.  In recent years Alex’s focus is drums. He studied with jazz drummer Duncan Branom.  Alex plays guitars along with a bit of pedal steel guitar and bass. Alex’s influences are John Densmore, Clyde Stubblefield, Joe Marello, Jimmy Page, David Gilmore, Alex Lifeson and many others.
